You can always talk about the weather when socialising with a customer or colleague. However, what about starting the conversation with a surprising fact? Something like: “Did you know that London taxi drivers (called ‘cabbies’) have to pass a tough test called ‘The Knowledge’ before they can drive the black cabs (or taxis)”?

How can you start a conversation with a colleague or customer in English? Of course, you can always talk about the weather and other safe topics. But what about starting with a surprising fact? Something like: “Did you know that the London Underground is the world’s oldest underground railway?” (It was 150 years old last year!)

Did you know that over 300 languages are spoken in London? I can quite believe it because when I’m there and need to ask for directions, it’s always difficult to find a real Londoner! More often than not I’ve stopped a foreigner!

People who work with me know that I love London. I find it a fascinating city. Actually, it’s one of my favourites.
