Hi Ele, That sounds like such a positive way to teach. Speaking, small performances and songs can make such a difference, especially compared with the very formal way many of us learned.

I was actually once asked whether I could help out for six months at a Realschule that urgently needed an English teacher. It was an interesting idea, but it also confirmed for me that I’m happiest working independently and supporting business professionals in my own way.

Hi Christine! That was exactly the way I learned languages at school. English as well as French. Being a teacher for so many years, I tried to do better. Let my kids talk, perform little plays and sing. I do hope, they had more fun an were better in communicating.

Great question, Sigrid. Adding “please” is absolutely fine, especially in more formal contexts.

That said, the politeness is already built into “Could you…?”. In English, clarity is usually heard as professional, not demanding. Rude is abrupt. Clear is respectful.

And making it easy for someone to understand what you want is, in itself, polite.

Thanks for clarifying that, Christine. What about the “please”: shouldn’t that be added? Otherwise, doesn’t the sentence sound too demanding, in the sense of being rude, at least to people in institutions that I don’t know very well yet?

Supper is the meal word which me confused most. I didn’t hear it before.
For me the meal words:
Breakfast, Lunch, Tea-Time, Dinner.
