Language Learning: More Than Meets the Ear

Ever thought learning a new language was just about impressing locals on holiday or landing that international job?

What if I told you that wrestling with Finnish grammar or mastering the art of French small talk could actually make you a communication superhero… in your own language?

I had this ‘aha!’ moment 💡 thanks to my lovely colleague Birte M. Harring and a testimonial from one of her students learning German.

So, how can learning a new language make you a communication superstar in your own language:

  • You become as patient as a Zen master  (or at least of someone who’s tried to pronounce ‘Worcestershire’ correctly).
  • You transform into an expert at explaining tricky ideas simply (like how to use ‘werden’ for both future tense and passive voice).
  • You become more aware of potential misunderstandings, even when they seem invisible to others.
  • You read body language better than a professional poker player (because sometimes a raised eyebrow says more than words, right?).
  • You develop a deeper respect for anyone brave enough to tackle German’s endless compound words and three grammatical genders.

In short, learning a new language enriches you in unexpected and delightful ways.

So, tell me. Has your language-learning journey made you a better communicator in your mother tongue?
