A Kinder Way to Say “I Think You Misunderstood”

Saying “I think you misunderstood me” can sound accusatory – even when you don’t mean it that way.

In meetings or emails, this phrase subtly places blame on the listener rather than focusing on clarity.

 Try one of these instead:

  • “Let me explain that another way.”
  • “Sorry if I wasn’t clear – what I meant was…”
  • “Maybe I didn’t phrase that well. Here’s what I wanted to say.”

These alternatives keep conversations collaborative instead of defensive.

Because effective communication isn’t about who’s wrong. It’s about making sure everyone understands.
