“I Become 50 Next Week” – Why It Sounds a Bit… Robotic

Another classic birthday sentence I often hear:

“I become 50 next week.”

Totally understandable. But also totally… German.

(Ich werde 50 nächste Woche → I become 50… makes perfect sense in your head!)

But in natural English, we don’t become an age.

Here’s what we say instead:

I’m turning 50 next week.
I’ll be 50 next week.
My 50th birthday is next week.
Big birthday coming up – I turn 50 on Friday!

And something slightly playful for confident speakers:

“Yes – it’s my 50th. Send help… or cake.” 😄

It’s one of those expressions where English and German just take different paths.

So if your birthday’s coming up, skip the robot voice 😉 and say:

“I’m turning 50 next week!”

It’s simple. Natural. And yes… you’re allowed to sound excited about it.
