What Is “Whitsun”—And Do People Still Say That?
In Germany, Pfingsten is a major holiday.
In English, it’s called Whitsun – short for “White Sunday.”
Officially:
Whit Sunday = Pentecost Sunday
Whit Monday = the day after (a public holiday in many countries)
But here’s the thing:
👉 In modern English, “Whitsun” isn’t used very often any more – especially outside the UK.
🟢 In the US: most people say Pentecost (if they mention it at all).
🟢 In the UK: Whitsun break still appears on school calendars, but it’s not widely talked about in everyday conversation.
How to talk about it at work:
- “I’ll be off on Monday – it’s a public holiday here for Pentecost.”
- “It’s Whit Monday in Germany, so I may be a bit slower to reply.”
- “Hope you’re enjoying the long weekend if you have one!”
Little culture tips like this make your English sound more confident – and more global.
