People Say: Small Talk Is a Waste of Time.

But Here’s What’s Actually True.

I hear this all the time… especially from German-speaking professionals:

“I don’t have time for small talk.”
“It feels fake.”
“Let’s just get to the point.”

And I get it.
Small talk can feel uncomfortable or unnecessary, especially in fast-paced business settings.

But here’s what’s actually true:

Small talk isn’t just talking about the weather.
It’s a trust signal.

It shows people you’re open, human and safe to work with.

And in international teams, trust matters more than perfect grammar or detailed slides.

Try starting your next meeting with one of these:

“Any special plans for the weekend?”
“How’s the weather where you are?”
“Have you had a busy day so far?”

You don’t have to be funny.
You don’t have to be fluent.
You just have to be human.

👉 Small talk isn’t a distraction.
It’s how relationships start.
