Do you get the joke?

Jokes are not always easy to understand in another language, are they? Do you get this one?

“Old bankers never die, they just lose interest.”

(‘Interest’ can mean ‘Interesse’, but it also can mean ‘Zinsen’).

Giving your personal opinion

You’re writing an email or letter and would like to give your personal opinion. Remember that plain and simple phrases are the best. So you could use the following:

I think … or I believe … (both less formal)
In my opinion … or In my view …(more formal)

I think that you’re doing a good job.
In my opinion, both examples are excellent.

Can this change your life?

Mark Twain offers us some great advice …”Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

How Germany was invented

German as a unified modern state has only existed since 1871. If you’re interested in German history, then you must listen to the BBC’s three part history of Germany before the world wars. You’ll learn about:

  • The Thirty Years War
  • The Rise of Prussia
  • Germany Unified

And here’s the answer to yesterday’s brain teaser: All the letters look the same in the mirror apart from the ‘R’.
