Time to spruce up your writing

If you’d like to improve your writing, you might like these tips here (link to: medium.com).

The author suggests we:

  1. cut out the word “that”;
  2. delete the words “I think”;
  3. avoid words ending in “-ing”;
  4. write short sentences and short paragraphs (we’ve spoken about this before); and
  5. start with a short opening sentence to make it more compelling.

Stretch those muscles

According to this article (link to: medium.com) written by Larry Kim founder of WordStream, creativity is very much like a muscle that needs to be “stretched, challenged, and occasionally pushed past its comfort zone.”

So what can we do to stretch those creative muscles? The author suggests that we:

  1. learn through collaboration;
  2. do something we love;
  3. find inspiration from other industries;
  4. unplug (or just do nothing);
  5. walk;
  6. set the right mood;
  7. use the six thinking hats technique;
  8. ask for advice or feedback;
  9. pick a terrible idea.

So what are you going to do next? I think I’ll pick a terrible idea and then see what happens! 😉

Happy New Year!

Welcome to the New Year with U2’s song New Year’s Day (link to: YouTube.com) …

Yeah
All is quiet on New Year’s Day
A world in white gets underway
I want to be with you
Be with you, night and day
Nothing changes on New Year’s Day
On New Year’s Day

I will be with you again
I will be with you again

Under a blood red sky
A crowd has gathered in black and white
Arms entwined, the chosen few
The newspapers says, says
Say it’s true, it’s true
And we can break through
Though torn in two
We can be one

I, I will begin again
I, I will begin again

Oh, oh

Oh, oh
Oh, oh
Oh, oh

Oh, oh
Oh, oh
Oh, oh

Ah, maybe the time is right
Oh, maybe tonight

I will be with you again
I will be with you again

And so we’re told this is the golden age
And gold is the reason for the wars we wage
Though I want to be with you
Be with you night and day
Nothing changes
On New Year’s Day
On New Year’s Day
On New Year’s Day

More on memorising numbers

In this video, Ron White tell us how he uses the “Mind Palace” to remember numbers. He says that anyone can learn these techniques.

He makes it all sound so easy. He creates pictures for the numbers 1 – 20. And he also creates pictures for all the letters of the alphabet. And then he uses the furniture in his house! You must listen to him explain all this in detail.

Playing and eating domino “stones”

Playing and eating domino “stones”

One of my favourite games as a child was playing dominos. It’s a game with small rectangular tiles, each with a line dividing its face into two square ends. Each end is marked with a number of spots or is blank. We played it a lot at Christmas.

Here in Germany, we have “Dominosteine” (domino bricks or stones) which are filled with gingerbread and coated in chocolate and often eaten at Christmas. I don’t like them much, but I know a lot of people do.

Getting ready for 2017

Getting ready for 2017

Are you planning a New Year’s Eve party and haven’t been able to give it much thought because of Christmas? Marieclaire.com might inspire you.

What about organising a last-minute Black and White party or a Glitter party or a Black Light party or a Mini Everything party? My favourite is the Midnight in Paris party. However, I’ll probably be enjoying a quiet New Year’s Eve – with good food, good company and a good film. Something light and not too serious. Not for the last day of the year!
