Mann, was für ‘ne Woche! Ich schwöre, diese Englisch-Sache bringt mich noch um den Verstand. Aber von vorne:

Also, Franz und ich hatten gestern unsere Online-Stunde mit Christine. Franz war natürlich wieder mal Mister Cool (wie macht er das?). Der Typ könnte wahrscheinlich sogar im Schlaf Englisch reden, ich schwör’s.

Jedenfalls plappere ich fröhlich drauf los und erzähle Christine: “We’re really looking forward to the shooting next week.” Ich wollte ja nur sagen, dass wir neue Fotos machen. Aber Christine guckt plötzlich, als hätte ich gesagt, wir planen einen Banküberfall.

Dann erklärt sie uns, dass “Shooting” auf Englisch ‘ne ganz andere Nummer ist. Die denken da an Ballerei und so. Boah, wie peinlich! Stellt dir mal vor, ich hätte das ‘nem echten Ami oder Briten an den Kopf geknallt. Die hätten bestimmt die Polizei gerufen.

Franz fand’s natürlich super witzig. Der hat sich weggeschmissen vor Lachen. Aber weißt du was? Ich auch! Ich meine, wie absurd ist das denn? Da denkt man, man ist voll international unterwegs mit seinem Denglisch, und dann sowas.

Christine meinte, wir sollen “photo shoot” sagen. Klingt irgendwie weniger cool, aber immerhin ruft keiner das SEK, wenn ich das sage.

Fazit des Tages: Englisch ist echt ‘ne Tücke. Aber was soll’s, lieber jetzt blamieren als später vor Kunden, ne? Und mal ehrlich, gelacht haben wir auch. Vielleicht wird das mit dem Englisch ja doch noch was. Aber für’s Erste heißt es wohl: Weniger Denglisch, mehr echtes Englisch.

7. “A bijou studio flat”
   You think: A cute little apartment. Means: A really, really tiny room 🏠
8. “Not the sharpest pencil in the box”
   You think: A dull pencil. Means: Not very smart 🤓

Remember, English can be weird and fun. Now you know these secret meanings.

Use them carefully. And if you do, you might even surprise some native speakers too! 😉

Let’s be honest: who hasn’t thrown their dictionary away in frustration because those pesky words just won’t stick in your head?

But don’t despair! There are effective methods to remember vocabulary better—and they’re not magic tricks.

Here are my top tips:

• Context is everything. Try to use new words in sentences or short stories to create connections between the words and what they mean.
• Use music to your advantage. Musicality helps in remembering words, so try singing your vocabulary!
• Practise regularly. Choose a few old words each day and repeat them deliberately.
• Find the right method for you. We all learn differently, so try out different methods to figure out what works best for you.
• Stay motivated! Set small goals and celebrate your progress. Studying with a friend or participating in a language trip can also help you stay motivated.

And remember: mistakes are a part of the learning process!

Here is an additional tip:

• Use spaced repetition. It works by reviewing information at increasing intervals. For example, you might review something every day for a week, then every other day for a week, then once a week, and so on.

  You can use spaced repetition apps like Anki or Memrise to help you remember vocabulary.

Gestern habe ich von Christine etwas Tolles gelernt Etwas, das mein Leben verändert hat – oder zumindest meine Texte. Sie hat mir den Hemingway Editor empfohlen, und jetzt fühle ich mich wie eine Schriftstellerin mit ihrem eigenen Ghostwriting-Team.

Also, der Hemingway Editor ist so eine Art Sprach-Zauberstab. Du fütterst ihn mit deinen geschriebenen Wörtern, und dann passiert die Magie.

Die Software analysiert deinen Text und kategorisiert ihn in verschiedene Klassen: “schwierig zu lesen”, “sehr schwierig zu lesen”, “Verwendung von passiv”, “zu viele Adverbien” oder “komplizierte Wörter”.

Aber das Beste daran: Ich kann ganz leicht sehen, wo meine Schwachstellen liegen und wie ich sie verbessern kann. Als ob der Hemingway Editor zu mir sagt: “Hey Greta, hier ist der Weg aus dem Dickicht der komplizierten Sätze – nimm diese Abkürzung!” 🌿

Und weißt du, was noch cooler ist? Der Hemingway Editor gibt nicht nur Tipps zur Vereinfachung komplexer Sätze, sondern auch Vorschläge für leistungsfähige Synonyme.

Und dann kommt der Höhepunkt: Er kann sogar einschätzen, auf welchem Leseniveau mein Text liegt.

Ich sehe mich schon als nächste J.K. Rowling oder doch eher Stephen King. “Greta, du schreibst auf Grade 42 – weiter so!” 📚

Natürlich weiß ich, dass keine Software die menschliche Intuition oder Kreativität ersetzen kann. Manche Vorschläge passen vielleicht nicht immer zu meinem individuellen Schreibstil. Aber wer sagt schon nein zu einem nützlichen Tool, das dazu beitragen kann, den eigenen Text auf Hochglanz zu polieren?
