A very important person
‘VIP’ is an abbreviation for ‘very important person’. We spell the letters out rather than pronounce them as a word. That means that the sentence, “He was treated as a VIP” sounds like, “He was treated as a V – I – P” (or ‘vee-eye-pee’).
