Can you name it?
Here’s a visual vocabulary quiz from Merriam-Webster (the dictionary people). Each round has 10 questions, but you can play it again and again as they have lots and lots of different versions.
So how does it work? You are shown a picture and have then to name what you see. You are given four words to choose from. But it’s still a bit tricky … Give it a try and see for yourself.
I used to like cars like this …
I often hear the phrase ‘in former times’ used as a translation of the German word ‘früher’. Actually, we English speakers don’t use this phrase.
I would suggest you use the phrase ‘used to’.
“I used to live in Hamburg but now I live near Cologne.”
“She used to play netball when she was younger.”
Did you know?
You can always talk about the weather when socialising with a customer or colleague. However, what about starting the conversation with a surprising fact? Something like: “Did you know that an average four-year-old asks more than 400 questions a day?”
I’m not sure whether this is really true (I read it somewhere), but I do remember my own children asking me lots and lots of questions when they were small! 🙂
