The early party

The early party

Birthday

It’s considered back luck to celebrate a birthday before the actual day in Germany (and even to give a present beforehand). However, it is allowed to “reinfeiern”. Now this is a really difficult word to explain in English because we don’t normally do it! So what could we say?

Would you agree with me that it means getting together on the evening before the actual birthday, anniversary or whatever and continuing to celebrate until the early hours of the next day?

See here what Deutsche Welle has written about the topic.

The 14 commandments

We know that good customer service is important, don’t we? Of course, it can always be improved on. That’s why I like to read David Rodnitzky’s (he’s CEO and co-founder of 3Q Digital) 14 commandments through now and again. (I read about them in this article here).

  1. Be Proactive, Not Reactive
  2. Over-communicate
  3. Everyone is a Client
  4. Under-Promise, Over-Deliver
  5. Do More than the Bare Minimum
  6. Love the Client’s Business, and Demonstrate Your Love
  7. Make Face Time
  8. Act Like It’s Your Business
  9. Build Personal Relationships
  10. Be Honest
  11. Follow the Process
  12. Communicate Success
  13. Have a Point of View
  14. The Customer is Always Right, Unless He’s Wrong, and Then He Still May be Right

Aren’t they great? Let’s hope that more people take them to heart! We all love excellent customer service.

(Please note: “to take to heart” = “beherzigen)

Signing off an email

Before you type your name at the end of an email, you want to sign off on a positive note. Look at this post (link to: bobulate.com) for some inspiration.

There are lots I don’t use, but lots I do. Some of my favourites: Don’t work too hard. / Take care. / All the best / Hope to hear from you soon.

Afternoon tea the correct way

You’ve been invited to afternoon tea in Britain, but have absolutely no idea how you should behave. Etiquette expert, William Hanson, explains the rules. Look at his video (go to www.dailymail.co.uk and scroll down the page) to learn what to do with the napkin, why you need a tea strainer, why I’ve been stirring my tea incorrectly, and how to eat scones (watch the pronunciation!).

I’ve already forgotten whether the cream or the jam goes on the scone first. But it’s really not that important, as I don’t come from the south-west of England! 😉

Golf on a windy day

Three elderly gentlemen in their eighties, who were all hard of hearing, were playing golf one fine day. The first man said to the others, “It’s windy, isn’t it?”. “No,” the second man replied, “it’s Thursday.” The third man chimed in, “So am I. Let’s have a beer.”
