“Dinner for One”—The Cult Classic Everyone Loves
Ever heard of Dinner for One? If you’re in Germany (or a few other parts of Europe), chances are, you’ve watched this quirky British sketch at least once on New Year’s Eve.
It’s become a beloved tradition.
Here’s the gist: the sketch features Miss Sophie, an elderly lady celebrating her 90th birthday with an imaginary dinner party.
Her loyal butler, James, serves the drinks and even takes on the roles of her “guests” to keep her happy.
Each toast gets funnier as James, well, drinks on behalf of every guest! (By the end, he’s in quite a state!)
This short black-and-white comedy has been broadcast every New Year’s Eve in Germany since the early 1970s.
Oddly enough, it’s relatively unknown in the UK, where it was originally filmed. But here, Dinner for One is part of the celebration—it’s almost like an old friend who brings everyone a laugh before the new year.
So, will you be watching Dinner for One this year? Or maybe it’s your first time?
