Shade or shadow: the two words English keeps separate

Shade and shadow look like the same idea. They’re not quite twins.

Stand under a tree on a hot day, and you’re in the shade, the cool patch where the sun can’t reach you. Step just outside it and you’ll see your shadow, the dark shape of you, stretched out on the ground.

One is the space. The other is the outline. English uses ‘shade’ for the general coolness and ‘shadow’ for the shape.

No rule to memorise. Just picture the tree. Shade is where you stand, shadow is what you cast.

Quick win: If you can point to its edges, it’s a shadow. If you can just feel it, it’s shade.
