Staff Is… or Staff Are? — Sparks Plus, Week 21

Welcome to this week’s Sparks Plus — your quick, practical boost for clearer, more confident English.
Six short sections, all easy to read and use right away.

1️⃣ Quick Win

Staff is a group word.

In British English, both can be OK, but these are the safest patterns:
Our staff are very helpful. (focus on the people)
Our staff is growing fast. (focus on the company as a unit)

If you want to avoid the whole debate:
Our team is great. (always safe)

2️⃣ Real-World English in Action

Denglish rescue:
A client said: I’ll send you a mail.

In English, mail is usually the post (letters).
For work messages, say:
I’ll send you an email.
I’ll email you today.

3️⃣ Christine’s Pick

YouGlish (pronunciation + real examples)
Type a word, and you hear it spoken in real YouTube clips (different accents too).
Great when you think: “I know this word, but how do people actually say it?”

4️⃣ Reader Question

Q: Should I say I’m open for questions?

A: Better:
I’m happy to take questions.
I’m open to questions.
Any questions so far?

(Open for is more for “open for business.”)

5️⃣ AI Prompt to Test

Try this in ChatGPT:

“Here is an email I wrote. Please rewrite it in clear, simple Global English (B1/B2). Keep it friendly, professional and shorter. Give me 2 versions: neutral and warm.”

Then paste one real email and see what you get.

6️⃣ Spotlight

What’s your Business English Learner Type?
Grammar Guru, Word Gourmet or Queen of Improv?
This quick quiz is playful, but it usually gives people a real “ohhh… that’s me” moment.
