Why I Believe in Global English (Even Though I’m a Native Speaker)

As a native English speaker, I have an unfair advantage. I was born into the language that has become the world’s common tongue. I never had to struggle with phrasal verbs or silent letters!

But this is exactly why I believe in Global English. The old idea that everyone must sound “British” or “American” makes no sense in today’s world. English belongs to everyone who uses it.

When I hear German, Indian, or Polish English, I don’t hear “mistakes”—I hear successful communication. Each accent and variation adds richness to our global conversation.

What matters isn’t perfect grammar or sounding like me. What matters is being understood and connecting across cultures.

The future of English isn’t about native speakers correcting others. It’s about creating a shared language where everyone has a voice, regardless of where they learnt it.

That’s the English I believe in—not mine, but ours.
