Ordering a Steak: What You Need to Know

Imagine you’re at an elegant restaurant, and the waiter asks how you’d like your steak.

You say “English”, thinking it’s the least cooked option …

Ahh! Stop! False alarm!

Let’s correct that quickly!

If you want a “bloody” steak, simply ask for “rare.”

Here are some tips for ordering a steak:

  • Be specific about how you want your steak cooked. Use terms like “rare,” “medium-rare,” “medium,” “medium-well,” or “well-done.”
  • If you’re unsure about the different cooking terms, ask your server for help.
  • Consider the cut of steak you’re ordering. Some cuts, like filet mignon, are best cooked rare to medium. Other cuts, like ribeye and New York strip, can be cooked to medium-well or even well-done.*
  • Don’t be afraid to send your steak back if it’s not cooked to your liking.

Have you ever ordered a steak and been surprised by the result? 🍽️

*But I’m really no expert here, I’m afraid!
