“Actual” ≠ “aktuell” — Sparks Plus, Week 15

Welcome to this week’s Sparks Plus – your quick, practical boost for clearer, more confident English.
Six short sections, all easy to read and use right away.

1️⃣ Quick Win

“Actual” does not mean aktuell.

  • actual = real, in fact
The actual cost was higher than expected.
  • current = happening now / at the moment
Our current plan needs a tweak.

2️⃣ Real-World English in Action

Denglish rescue:
A client wrote: I am coming late to the meeting.
In English, say:
I’ll be late to the meeting.
I’m running late. I’ll join at 10:10.

4️⃣ Reader Question

Q: What’s the difference between travel, trip and journey?
A:

  • travel = the activity in general. I love travel / business travel.
  • trip = a specific visit. I had a two-day trip to Hamburg.
  • journey = the route/time travelling. The journey took four hours.

5️⃣ AI Prompt to Test

Copy into ChatGPT:
“I’m a German professional who uses English at work. List 5 common ‘false friends’ Germans make (e.g., ‘actual/aktuell’). For each, give the better English word and a simple example sentence.”
