Every December, the same question pops up

Every year someone messages me: “Christine, which words do I capitalise in Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year?”

👉 Tiny aha: In greetings and cards, it’s standard to capitalise all four words.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
This looks clean and traditional.

Inside a normal sentence, you can go lowercase with merry and happy:
We wish you a merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

Both versions are correct.
Choose the one that fits where you’re writing. No stress needed.

💬 Have you already written your cards this year or are you a ‘last-minute on 23 December’ person?
