How to spot a (mildly mad) Brit abroad: lovely weather for ducks

We talk about the weather as if it were a national emergency.

Too hot. “Can’t cope.” Too cold. “Typical.” Rain. “Lovely weather for ducks.

None of this is really about the weather. It’s a script, and everyone already knows their lines. (I still haven’t found weather that doesn’t have one ready.)

You don’t need to learn these phrases yourself, and I’d honestly rather you didn’t. Idioms like these travel badly outside a British room. What’s useful is knowing the pattern. It’s a ritual. Nobody expects a real answer.

Quick win: Next time someone mentions the weather like this, don’t search for meaning. Just nod, and let the ritual do its work.

PS They’re not talking about the weather because they’re interested in it. They’re talking about it because silence is worse.
