Two questions before you speak
There’s a moment before you speak when you rehearse the sentence. Once for the grammar. Once for the word you’re not sure about. By the third run, the conversation has moved on.
That’s der innere Kontrolleur, checking everything before it leaves. He’s thorough. He’s also the reason your best point arrives thirty seconds late.
He won’t go away, and you don’t want him to. Give him something else to check.
Before you speak, ask what your point is and what you want the other person to do with it. He can check that instead.
(I do this in German. It works better than any preparation I’ve tried.)
Quick win: Finish this sentence in your head before you speak. „What I want them to know is...“ Then say it out loud without the beginning.
