Yesterday’s EULETA External Speaker Training with Christine Burgmer.
In her session “Working with Global English, giving supportive feedback and moving from ‘correcting’ to coaching,” Christine explained how a coaching mindset can transform our teaching.
Among the points discussed:
◆ Why communication should take priority over perfection
◆ Supporting senior professionals who fear losing face when speaking
◆ The belief that mistakes are data, not failure
“Yesterday I attended Christine Burgmer’s brilliant talk for EULETA members on “Moving from Correcting to Coaching.”
One idea in particular stood out to me: Students need to hear that language learning is just like sports: You need regular practice, not just theory.
If I had only attended brilliant lectures by the best ski instructors without ever practicing (and falling many times!), I would probably still be on the baby slope.
Language learning works the same way.
Progress comes from doing.”
“Thanks for your session with EULETA this evening. It really resonated with me, as a legal English teacher.
Lawyers tend to be perfectionists (I can empathise – I was a lawyer too!). They are incredibly skilled orators in their own language, so it can be frustrating not to have the same level of confidence in English.
You gave some great tips to help with giving feedback.”
“During Christine’s talk on moving from correcting to coaching, I once again realised the powerful impact a coaching approach can have on the overall learning process.
As someone who combines the expertise of a lawyer, a Legal English teacher and a coach, I clearly see how essential it is for every learner to feel supported and to have a safe space where they can express themselves without being judged and evaluated.
That is exactly the approach Christine demonstrated in her talk.”
“I really appreciated Christine’s honest insights and practical tips. Her shift towards Global English made me rethink what to prioritise in my next lesson.
An excellent reminder that adult professionals do not need to sound ‘native’; they need to be understood across cultures.
Her distinction between teaching and coaching captured why working with adult professionals is different, where clarity and confidence matter more than perfection.”
“I love your focus, your reframing and your posts. You transform my thinking about language and I believe you deeply change how people communicate.
I think working with you must be a great experience.”
“I’m on the EULETA board and attended Christine’s webinar on Global English and moving from correcting to coaching. A lot of what she said resonated deeply with how I already work with clients.
The session prompted me to articulate my approach more consciously. Shortly afterwards, I updated how I describe my work on LinkedIn and almost immediately attracted a new client seeking support with high-level professional communication rather than conventional lessons.”
“What got me thinking was when you mentioned ‘Global English’: It made me reflect on my own teaching practices, whether I was truly preparing my students for a global world or a select dialect.
Besides that, coaching is something I have been considering over the past year but I did not understand the difference between teaching and coaching, until I attended your workshop.
I got a lot of pointers from your session and I hope to become a language coach soon.”
“I attended one of Christine’s Speed Networking events and saw her smoothly leading the call, making everyone feel comfortable and heard.
Christine’s skills go beyond teaching the language and include mentoring future language teachers.
She’s an excellent example of how to combine 25 years of experience with new technology, and she’s got the rare ability of expertly making the best of both these worlds.”
